CDL - Center for Development and Learning
The Center for Development & Learning (CDL), established in 1962, is one of the four component programs of the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD). The focus of the CDL has been on the integration of multidisciplinary clinical, teaching, and research activities in developmental disabilities.
The CDL is North Carolina’s Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) and is part of the national network of UCEDDs affiliated with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) network. The UCEDD funding supports the clinical service, technical assistance, community training, and DD policy activities of the CDL.
The CDL is also home to the North Carolina Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NC-LEND) funded by the Maternal & Child Health [Bureau](MCH), one of only 43 LENDs in the country. The LEND funding supports the clinical and leadership training activities of the CDL. The CDL was recently awarded “Autism Expansion” funding for our NC-LEND program (LEND-AE) that will support additional clinical and leadership training in autism. This component of the CDL will be described in more detail below.
The CDL comprises of a group of university faculty and staff and affiliated state and community service partners who focus on services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Our faculty consists of professionals in the disciplines of pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, education, speech language pathology, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, social work, public health, nursing, and dentistry. Advanced trainees in each of these disciplines work closely with CDL faculty in all areas of CDL operations (leadership, clinical service, teaching, and research). Our faculty and trainees work in partnership with a variety of state and community partners who consist of key state leaders in the areas of health services, public health, education, legislation, and advocacy for persons with disabilities as well as a statewide network of service providers.
Annually, we provide interdisciplinary clinical services to over 1,900 persons with disabilities throughout the state through a network of over 40 CDL clinics, contracts, and programs. These services take place through CDL clinics, in homes, in schools, and in a variety of community settings. In addition we provide multidisciplinary training to approximately 200 trainees per year (training durations vary from 3 year fellowships, to 1 year fellowships, and 1 semester practicum).
