The speakers, both parents of young men with ASD, will describe their sons’ college experiences - one in a program supporting students with I/DD, and one fully included with general campus supports. Discussion will include challenges students with autism or I/DD often face, how to access supports, the parent’s role in supporting the student, and how parents can prepare the student for a successful transition to college.

“Growing up with a sibling with I/DD”
Sarah Palmer
Sarah is a school psychologist in the Alamance-Burlington School System. She is active on the
district's autism team and conducts bilingual evaluations across the county. Sarah has an older
brother on the autism spectrum.
Whitney Griffin, PhD
Whitney is a psychology post-doctoral fellow and Education Specialist at the Carolina Institute for
Developmental Disabilities and has a younger brother with Autism. Whitney also works in a postdoctoral role
at the Psychoeducational Clinic at North Carolina State University.
Zakiya Morris
Zakiya is a first-year student at UNC Chapel Hill. She is a psychology major and wants to
pursue a career in audiology. She has two older siblings, a brother and a sister - her brother
has CHARGE Syndrome.
Brook Galesic
Brook has a younger brother with Prader Willi Syndrome. Inspired by her brother, she became a
special educator for Wake County Public Schools. She is active in specialized recreation and
is the coach for her brother’s Miracle League baseball team.
Zion Gardner
Zion is the second oldest of five siblings, one of which, his youngest sister, has Down Syndrome. He attends
Savannah College of Art and Design and is majoring in Film and Television. In his spare time Zion enjoys
writing stories and playing video games.
